Private visit to the Church of St. Paul’s Shipwreck in Valletta
The Collegiate Parish Church of St Paul’s Shipwreck, commonly known as the Church of St Paul’s Shipwreck, is one of the oldest and most historically significant Roman Catholic churches in Valletta. Designed by the renowned Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar, construction of the church began in the 1570s and was completed in December 1582.
The church is dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle, revered as the spiritual father of the Maltese people. According to the New Testament (Acts 28:1), Saint Paul was shipwrecked on the island—then known as Melita—a pivotal moment in Malta’s Christian heritage. As St. Luke recorded, “we found that the island was called Melita.”
